It’s already August and school is just about back in session. While your child is probably ready with ample school supplies and new clothes, is their smile ready for a successful school year? To help your child maintain good attendance, you can help by promoting healthy teeth and gums. To help you do this, our dentist, Dr. Eric Dunn and our team have some helpful tips to share with you today.
First, make sure your child is cleaning their smiles daily for optimum oral hygiene. As part of their school “supplies”, provide them with the right tools for their smiles. Stock up on soft-bristled toothbrushes, a fluoride toothpaste, a dental flossing method they will actually use, and an antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash which has the American Dental Association Seal of Approval on them. This will ensure that their smile essentials are both safe and effective!
Second, help them succeed in school by teaching them to watch their dietary needs. Instead of sodas and sugary drinks, pack their backpacks with plenty of water for healthy levels of saliva production. Also, set limits on snacking, and stock the fridge and their lunch packs with sliced fruit, vegetables, dairy and lean meat to build strong teeth and healthy gums.
Lastly, to complement their daily oral hygiene efforts, schedule dental cleanings and checkups with Dr. Eric Dunn every six months to remove tartar and check for dental issues while they are small and easily treated. We can also provide additional treatments such as fluoride treatment or dental sealants to keep their oral cavity healthy.
